commissioned by the dalian wanda group, this vibrant structure in wuhan, china has been termed ‘the world’s first indoor movie theme park’. completed by stufish entertainment architects, the 100,000 square meter project houses six film-related attractions, including 4 and 5D cinema screens, a flight theater and immersive and interactive live performances. nicknamed ‘the golden bells’, the design references a local 2,000-year-old relic which still exists today as a cultural artifact from the han dynasty.

the structure’s 24 clustered volumes are covered with 11,000 bespoke aluminum panels, coated with a fluorocarbon paint that encourages self cleaning. strips of LEDs fill the gaps between the horizontal rows of paneling, allowing the movie park to glow vibrantly at night.

the scheme’s landscaping was also carefully considered, as its terraced planting, outdoor seating, and water features reference the agricultural practices of the hubei province, in which the city of wuhan is located.

the movie park joins ‘the han show theater‘ – also designed by stufish – as part of the region’s wuhan central cultural district. the region includes offices, residential facilities, cultural buildings and a host of shopping malls across the two kilometer site.
