after the devastating earthquake which hit new zealand in 2010 and 2011, christchurch began their central recovery plan to lay the framework for the redevelopment of the city center- the new central library (NCL) is a principal project within this recovery plan. under the four principal themes:  dynamically connected for discovery and learning, a fusion of spaces for every function, equipped for every purpose and a welcoming place, the vision for the new library has been developed by danish practice schmidt hammer lassen architects and local practice architectus. additionally, the building draws its influence from the ngāi tahu heritage where elements taken from their traditions have been used to shape the architectural strategy. ultimately, the end aim for this regeneration plan is for the city to become a vibrant, greener and accessible municipality for all people and cultures.

the 12,000 sqm building will contain spaces for exhibitions, performances with an education centre and indoor and outdoor relaxation areas. serving as a significant, central hub in the city, the civic building will enable citizens to have an access to digital technologies meanwhile help develop a connection to the canterbury landscape. keeping a strong connection between the building and it’s context, the materials used will be in close relation to the abundant nature and colors of new zealand- seen in the warm hue of the exterior cladding.
